While at Princeton Jimmy dated Angela Ianotti and she became pregnant with his son. He beat a teacher in defense of his visiting mother, and slept with her when both were drunk.
His son Tommy Darmody was born while he was fighting in the war. During his service in France his right leg was injured by shrapnel from a German grenade causing him to walk with a limp. He returned to Atlantic City after recovering from his injuries and worked as a driver and bodyguard for Nucky.

They actually talk about Jimmy Boyd in the show, so I dont believe this assessment is correct.
If Jimmy is based on Jimmy Boyd then it's a loose adaptation. Jimmy Boyd seems like a mixture of Jimmy in small amount and the young Paddy Ryan, whom Nucky appointed to be the 4th Ward boss -- an appointment that, as you know, doesn't sit too well with Jimmy.
The commentaries suggest Darmody is a composite of several Great War vets who came home to nothing and so many turned to some racket.
