On good days, Grewe said he will get as many as a half-pound of leeches in one bag. With 60 bags in this slough, a productive harvest could generate nearly 30 pounds of leeches. They come out of ponds. Like the pond Grewe was rowing his boat around last week. He knows, from experience, that the warmer it gets, the fewer leeches he will trap. Harvest usually ends by June 1. One of these days I'll quit. A late spring pushed us back several weeks with deep snow and thick ice - but the weather has finally warmed up and the leeches are flowing!
The pictures below are a few samples of the current status of our bait. Happy Fishing! We only trap and sell leeches by the pound and we deliver fresh leeches to our wholesale and retail customers anywhere in the continental USA directly from the trapper. This measure is effective but it will also kill other forms of aquatic life that burrow in the mud. This method would not be allowed on State owned bodies of water because of the impact on other aquatic life.
Since leeches prefer the shallow areas of lakes, swimming in deeper waters will reduce the risk of a leech attaching to a swimmer. A boat or float can be used to get to the deeper water or a person can swim out to the deeper waters.
Leeches are important in the food web of a lake. They are predators, prey, parasites and vectors of parasites. The leeches of North America are not nearly as serious a pest as tropical leeches. Fishing with Ribbon leeches is very popular in the northern part of the United States.
In Wisconsin there are several species of fish like walleyes, bass, perch, bluegill, and crappie that seem to like eating leeches. Leeches are a great alternative to nightcrawlers. All leeches have 2 sucking discs one at each end.
The larger disc is located at the tail which is used most of the time to hold on to things. The smaller disc is the mouth area. Most anglers hook a leech around the large disc area. The large disc and small disc on a leech are also used in the reproduction process because they contain both male and female reproductive organs. There may be slight color variations from either a light brown to olive green but most are blackish. Some leeches will also have a few black spots.
